step-by-step instructions to make a clay volcano:

  1. Set up your tray with wax paper or your paper plate.
  2. Cut your plastic cup so that it is about 3″ tall or so, and place that in the middle of your tray. Start to create coils/snakes of clay and place them around the cup.

3. Add your baking soda to the cup.

4. Start adding clay around the bottom for the base and on the outside edges, creating your volcano shape.

5. Once your base is finished, add a few coils to the top of the volcano to hide the cup inside, you can make each coil a little bit smaller so that the opening gets smaller on the top.

6. You can add other decorations to your tray and volcano at this point. You will need to let your volcano dry completely, at least 24 hours.

7. Mix your vinegar, dish soap, and optional food coloring. Slowly start to pour inside your volcano to see the magic start to happen!
